Statkraft signs PPA to power Finland's Wihuri with renewables
Sep 19, 2024 10:54 CESTGerman renewables cooperative Prokon has commissioned a 41.3 MW wind park in western Finland and received authorisation for a repowering project in Germany.
The Finnish facility, located in the village of Bjorkliden, consists of seven wind turbines supplied by German manufacturer Nordex (ETR:NDX1). About 85% of its output will be used by digital infrastructure company Equinix Inc (NASDAQ:EQIX) under 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA) signed in January 2022.
Prokon owns a 19.9% stake in the wind farm. The remaining part is held by its project partner, French renewable power producer Neoen. The two companies initiated the construction of the facility in July 2022.
Prokon also said that it has received permission to replace nine existing wind turbines with four more powerful new ones in the municipality of Quarnstedt in northern Germany.
The four new wind turbines are of the Nordex-N163 type and have a total installed capacity of 28 MW. This is more than double the previous capacity. The energy output of the new turbines will be around 52.2 million kWh annually. Prokon plans to start dismantling the old turbines in the first half of 2026. The construction of the new ones is expected to begin in the second half of the year. The repowered wind farm should be connected to the grid at the end of 2027.
Overall, Prokon has so far built 72 wind farms with 410 wind turbines in Germany, Finland, and Poland. These have an installed capacity of 872.3 MW and generate 1 billion kWh of green electricity per year.
