Prysmian bags EUR-5bn offshore cabling deal from Germany's Amprion Source: Prysmian SpA

Cable manufacturer Prysmian SpA (BIT:PRY) has secured EUR 5 billion (USD 5.37bn) worth of contracts to install the BalWin1 and BalWin2 offshore grid connection systems and the DC34 underground cable project in Germany.

The three deals were placed by transmission system operator Amprion GmbH and are effective immediately, Prysmian said on Thursday. The contracts were signed after last summer the Milan, Italy-based company was picked as the preferred bidder to perform the task.

The three transmission projects will support the transport of electricity generated by wind farms in the North Sea to consumers in western and southern Germany. They envisage laying about 4,400 km (2,734 mi) of HVDC cables and Dedicated Metallic Return (DMR) cables, including 3,400 km of land and 1,000 km of submarine cables.

Planned with a capacity of up to 2 GW each, BalWin1 and BalWin2 will transmit power from offshore wind farms to be built in the BalWin Cluster in the German North Sea to grid connection points in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia. DC34 is part of the Rhein-Main-Link. It will connect substations in Lower Saxony and Hesse to transmit up to 2 GW of energy produced by the offshore wind farms to the Rhine-Main metropolitan area.
