French independent renewable power producer Qair has secured EUR 7.8 million (USD 8.3m) of debt financing to build and operate two solar parks that will add 20 MW of power generation capacity in Tunisia.

The funding will be extended by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the Paris-based company said on Monday.

The fresh capital will be allocated for the construction of the Feriana photovoltaic (PV) plants in the town of Feriana, in the Kasserine Governorate of west-central Tunisia, and related grid-connection infrastructure facilities to a nearby Tunisian Company for Electricity and Gas (STEG) substation. The capacity will be installed on a site leased for 25 years.

Qair owns 100% of the first 10-MW project, while the second scheme is a joint venture with oil and gas exploration company Mazarine Energy. Following the construction phase, both projects will be operated by the French firm.

In Tunisia, Qair currently has a renewable energy development pipeline of almost 900 MW. The company has been active in the North African country since 2015. Together with STEG, Qair brought online Tunisia’s first floating solar power plant on Tunis Lake in 2022.
