Qatar is to launch this year a 500-MW solar power tender, the president of Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) told reporters last week.

The solar power plant is planned to start work in 2019 or 2020, the Peninsula said, citing Essa bin Hilal Al Kuwari.

Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC) and Qatar Petroleum (QP) announced in early 2016 that they would form a 60/40 solar power joint venture. Reuters reported at the time, citing QEWC’s general manager, that other companies would compete in tenders for participation in the solar projects of the JV. The Peninsula's article mentions QEWC and QP as "partners" in the launch of the upcoming tender. Details are not yet available.

French energy major Total SA (EPA:FP) and its subsidiary SunPower Corp (NASDAQ:SPWR) in March said they would consider the possibility of joining the solar plans of the Qatari joint venture.
