Qatar aims to increase the share of renewable energy to 4 GW by 2030 as part of the country's renewable energy strategy launched at the end of April.

The strategy, introduced by Qatar General Electricity and Water Corp., known as Kahramaa, aims to diversify and increase the use of renewables, especially solar energy, in the Gulf state and integrate it into the electricity mix, Kahramaa said as cited by the state-owned Qatar News Agency (QNA).

The strategy was developed in partnership with 22 key energy stakeholders and is built upon three pillars -- reducing emissions through sustainable policies; increasing the penetration of renewable energy while maintaining grid stability; maximising the socio-economic contribution from renewable energy.

In addition to large-scale solar parks, Kahramaa, which serves as the water and electricity regulator in the country, also recommends deploying a distributed solar generation capacity of about 200 MW by the end of this decade.

As part of the strategy, a net billing mechanism is planned to be introduced to allow prosumers to sell excess electricity back to the grid at a fixed rate. Utilising a two-way meter, electricity consumed and surplus exported to the power grid will be measured. This initiative aims to reduce consumers' bills and promote investments in solar energy projects.

In 2022, Qatar launched the first utility-scale solar plant in the country -- the 800-MWp Al Kharsaah complex.
