Qatar to bring live up to 15-MW solar park in Q1 2016

Nov 19, 2014 - Qatar is expected to put on stream an up to 15-MW solar park, the first one in the country, in the first quarter of 2016, an official from the Qatar Electricity & Water Company QSC (QEWC) said yesterday.

Work on the project will be tendered at the start of 2015, the head of QEWC’s renewable energy technologies division Saleh Hamad al-Marri told reporters on the sidelines of the Solar Qatar Summit. The photovoltaic (PV) will be installed in Duhail and will have a capacity of between 10 MW and 15 MW. Further details were not provided.

Power authorities in Qatar have identified 60 locations that are suitable for the construction of renewable energy facilities, al-Marri said. This summer, Kim Ahrenfeldt, the general manager of Danish firm SolarDrive told the Gulf Times that solar power technologies could be a billion-dollar industry even in a country like Qatar that depends mainly on oil and gas. According to the solar sector expert, solar technologies could be integrated in local buildings, airports, amusement parks, hotels or even be used on shipping containers.
