QatarEnergy unveils 2 GW solar project
Sep 02, 2024 10:55 CESTState-owned petroleum company QatarEnergy has selected Samsung C&T Corp. to build two photovoltaic (PV) solar power plants with a combined capacity of 875 MW in two industrial cities in the Gulf state.
The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the project was signed by QatarEnergy Renewable Solutions and Samsung C&T at a ceremony in Doha on Tuesday.
A 417-MW plant will be set up in the Mesaieed industrial city and another power station of 458 MW will be installed in the Ras Laffan industrial city. To be located on an area of 10 sq km, both parks are expected to start producing clean electricity by the end of 2024, utilising bicafial modules and cleaning robots.
The electricity from the two solar parks will help reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of QatarEnergy's facilities in the two industrial cities, including its NFE and NFS liquified natural gas projects. It will also boost grid capacity in other locations.
The IC Solar project is worth about QAR 2.3 billion (USD 631.8m/EUR 636.5m). It is the second utility-scale solar project in Qatar which is among the world's top gas exporters.
“This IC Solar project is a major step in the implementation of our strategy to diversify Qatar’s energy resources and to increase the reliance on high-efficiency renewable energy, which is a cornerstone for a sustainable future," said the Minister of State for Energy Affairs and QatarEnergy chief executive Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi.
The scheme will boost the Gulf country's green energy generation capacity to 1.675 GW and support QatarEnergy's goal of having 5 GW of solar-generated power by 2035.
