Queensland Hydro, an Aussie developer of pumped hydro energy storage assets, has awarded contracts worth roughly AUD 80 million (USD 54.1m/EUR 48.6m) related to the development of a 2-GW project in its home state.

The company set up by the Queensland government said on Tuesday it has selected Water2Wire, a joint venture (JV) of GHD, Mott MacDonald and Stantec, for the dams design engineering services for its pumped storage project. The job will be performed under two contracts for the lower and upper reservoirs of the dam. The combined value of the two deals is AUD 40 million.

Specifically, Water2Wire will take care of all engineering and design activities related to seven proposed dams.

Queensland Hydro has also awarded AUD-39.9-million contract to deliver front-end engineering design of the pumped storage project. The task will be performed by AFRY-Aurecon, a JV of Swedish energy and infrastructure consultancy AFRY AB and Australia’s Aurecon.

To be installed west of the Sunshine Coast, the Borumba pumped storage hydro complex will be set up at a cost of AUD 14.2 billion. The main works phase of the project is anticipated to begin in 2026.
