Recurrent inks PPAs for 250 MW of Texas solar power

US renewables company Recurrent Energy LLC has signed two power purchase agreements (PPAs) for 250 MW/350 MWp from its Maplewood and Maplewood 2 solar projects in West Texas.

Parent company Canadian Solar Inc (NASDAQ:CSIQ) announced today the signing of the 15-year contracts for 222 MW and 28 MW of solar power, respectively, with a unit of Belgian brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev (EBR:ABI), or AB InBev, and with gas pipeline company Energy Transfer.

AB InBev will be buying power from the Maplewood solar photovoltaic (PV) park, while Energy Transfer’s PPA is for Maplewood 2. Both are planned to be operational in 2021, likely using Canadian Solar poly modules. The company noted that Recurrent Energy is in the early stages of seeking potential equity partners for the two projects in Pecos County.

Anheuser-Busch’s VP of procurement and sustainability, Ingrid De Ryck, said that by 2021 the company's entire portfolio of beers will be brewed by using 100% wind and solar power. renewable electricity from solar and wind power. This is one of the company’s 2025 US sustainability goals and it will be met four years early.

The Maplewood PPA is the US beverage industry's largest single purchase of solar power, Canadian Solar said.

The Maplewood 2 PPA, meanwhile, will bring the share of renewables in power purchases by Energy Transfer to more than 20%, including both wind and solar power. It is the company’s first-ever dedicated solar contract.
