Queensland Hydro picks contractors for 2-GW pumped storage project
Sep 18, 2024 6:05 CESTAustralian energy storage firm Redflow Ltd (ASX:RFX) announced today that it has sealed a deal for the supply of 32 zinc-bromine flow batteries for two new children’s centres in Melbourne, Australia.
The centres located at Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, Knox Children and Family Centres and Bayswater, are opening in January 2019 and March 2019, respectively. They will each use a 100-kW solar system tied to 16 Redflow ZBM2 batteries able to store up to 160 kWh of energy. The storage solution is expected to generate energy cost savings of AUD 140,000 (USD 101,500/EUR 89,000) per year for each site.
Torus Group, a partner of the company, will be installing the first ZBM2 zinc-bromine flow batteries next week, the announcement says.
Redflow’s zinc-bromine flow batteries can discharge 100% of their stored energy daily without damaging the battery and provide sustained energy storage capacity for 10 years. They are tolerant to warm temperatures, Redflow mentioned.
“As well as cutting power costs, they will provide resilience for essential services, such as backup power for exit and emergency lighting and lift motors, which is important in a community facility like this,” stated Anthony Vippond, Torus Group CEO.
Vippond said further that Lotus Energy, a related entity, is exploring the opportunity for the two childcare centres to share their generated energy using blockchain technology.
