Redflow to ship batteries for telco mobile phone tower sites in S Africa

Australian energy storage company Redflow Ltd (ASX:RFX) has received an order to supply 68 units of its ZBM2 zinc-bromine flow batteries for at least 20 mobile phone tower sites in South Africa.

The client, an unnamed telecommunication company operating in several African countries, placed the order to Redflow’s South African partner Mobax which will install the batteries at mobile base stations that currently run on diesel generators.

ZBM2 has a storage capacity of 10 kWh and is capable of staying in standby mode for prolonged periods of time, including years, according to specifications.

Deployment of batteries is to start this month, Redflow said.

According to the company, one of the advantages of its product is that it weighs around 240 kg (529.11 lb) and, as it has no secondary resale value, is less likely to be stolen.

By opting for batteries to reduce diesel consumption, users will also lower their carbon tax liabilities established under South Africa’s new carbon pollution reduction regulations, which came into effect on June 1, Redflow noted.
