Renewable energy represented 44.7% of the EU’s electricity production in 2023, Eurostat says in an article based on data published recently by the bloc's statistical office.

Renewable generation last year increased by 12.4% compared with 2022, reaching 1.21 million GWh.

Electricity generated from fossil fuels in contrast fell 19.7% year-over-year to 0.88 million GWh, accounting for 32.5% of the total electricity production.

Nuclear produced 0.62 million GWh, up 1.2%, for a 22.8% share of the EU power generation.

The EU’s natural gas supply fell 7.4% compared with 2022 to 12.8 million terajoules (TJ), the lowest since 1995, according to Eurostat’s preliminary data. Brown coal supply and hard coal supply dropped by 24.2% and 20.4% respectively, while the supply of oil and petroleum products decreased 1.5%.

The supply of renewable energies in 2023 was around 10.9 million TJ, registering an increase of 4.4%.
