Renewable power plants in mainland Portugal generated 2,307 GWh of electricity in August, or 77.3% of the total, shows data from the Portuguese Association of Renewable Energy (APREN).

This represents an year-on-year increase in "renewable incorporation" of 16 percentage points.

The association says in a report that this share puts Portugal in fourth place among the European nations with the highest renewable incorporation in the period from August 1 to August 31, 2024. The country holds that same position when considering the shares for the entire year to date, as well.

Looking at the Portuguese renewable power sources, wind accounted for 29% of the total monthly power generation in August, while solar represented 21.6%, hydro held a 17% share, and biomass-fired plants covered 9.9%.

Outside of renewables, natural gas accounted for 8.8% and the rest came from fossil-based combined heat and power (CHP) and other sources.
