Portugal's renewable energy plants have met 82% of the nation's power needs during the first half of 2024, which is the highest level in 45 years, national grid operator Redes Energeticas Nacionais (REN) said on Wednesday.

Hydropower plants were at the top of the contribution list with a share of 39%. Wind parks followed in second place with 28%, while solar photovoltaic (PV) plants and biomass accounted for 9% and 6%, respectively.

Electricity consumption also grew in the first six months by 1.6%.

REN's data shows that renewables production met 57% of Portuguese consumption in June, while non-renewable production supplied 4%. The balance was covered by imports.
