National grid operator Redes Energeticas Nacionais (REN) said today that renewable energy plants in Portugal covered 88% of the country's electricity consumption in February.

Hydro, wind and solar all achieved new records for maximum delivery to the national grid last month. On February 28, hydropower reached 6,906 MW, while wind followed with 5,019 MW the next day. As per solar, photovoltaics (PV) delivered 1,919 MW on February 19.

REN's data shows that electricity from non-renewable sources accounted for 10% of Portugal's consumption last month, while imports covered the remaining 2%.

Year to date, renewables have met 84% of the nation’s power needs. Hydro and wind power plants were the top contributors with 44% and 30%, respectively. Biomass and solar photovoltaic (PV) energy followed each with a share of 5%, REN noted.
