EU opens new call for PCI, PMI energy infrastructure projects
Sep 18, 2024 15:49 CESTElectricity generation in Europe is greener than ever, Eurelectric said on Monday, with renewable and low-carbon energy sources accounting for 74% of power produced in the EU in the first half of 2024.
The share grew substantially from 68% in 2023, driven by a record renewables influx along with stabilisation of the nuclear fleet, Eurelectric, a body representing the interests of the European electricity industry, said.
According to its Electricity Data Platform, ELDA, renewables provided just above 50% of European electricity generation in the first half of the year, while nuclear delivered a stable share of almost 24%.
“The pace of change is impressive. These figures document that the decarbonisation efforts of electricity companies are years ahead of any other sector,” said Eurelectric’s secretary general Kristian Ruby.
However, power demand remains subdued because of slow economic growth, deindustrialisation and warmer weather, the body added.
”Policymakers must urgently support the uptake of electricity to provide the necessary investment signals for clean generation,” Kristian Ruby also said.
