Renewables in Argentina accounted for 18.6% of the country's electricity demand in April, surpassing the previous record set in October 2022, the energy secretariat said on Tuesday, citing figures from the wholesale electricity market operator CAMMESA.

Wind power played a significant role, supplying 74.1% of the renewables contribution, followed by solar power at 15.2%. Small hydropower and bioenergy plants also contributed, with percentages of 6.8% and 3.8%, respectively.

In total, renewables generated 1,856.4 GWh, while demand in the wholesale electricity market (MEM) stood at 10,000 GWh. Wind farms generated 1,376.3 GWh, followed by solar farms with an output of 283.3 GWh, small hydro with 126.4 GWh and bioenergy with 70.4 GWh.

When large hydroelectric plants, i.e. those with a capacity greater than 50 MW, are included, renewables accounted for 41.45% of electricity demand in April. Large hydropower plants added 2,289.53 GWh to the power mix, the energy secretariat said.
