Portugal's renewable energy plants generated enough electricity to cover 42% of the Iberian country's power consumption in September, national grid operator Redes Energeticas Nacionais (REN) announced this week.

The month also marked a new milestone for photovoltaic (PV) generation, with peak power delivered to the grid surpassing 1,800 MW for the first time.

According to REN's data, conventional energy sources made up 26% of Portugal's electricity consumption last month, with imports accounting for the remaining 32%.

For the initial nine months of the year, renewables have satisfied 55% of the country’s power needs. Wind energy contributed 24%, hydropower 17%, solar photovoltaic (PV) 8%, and biomass 6%.
