Renewable energy plants in Portugal supplied 81% of the country's electricity consumption in January, according to data from the national grid operator Redes Energeticas Nacionais (REN).

Hydropower plants made the most significant contribution to meeting power needs, securing a substantial share of 47%. Wind parks followed in second place with 25%, while biomass and solar photovoltaic (PV) plants accounted for 5% and 4%, respectively.

The wind farms reached a new peak with 4,917 MW generated on January 16, breaking the country’s previous daily record.

Natural gas power stations met 14% of the overall consumption in Portugal, while the remaining 5% represents energy that has been imported.

The overall electricity consumption in the country increased by 1.6% year-on-year in the first month of the year. When taking into account the effects of temperature and the number of working days, the rise was 3%, REN noted.
