Portugal's renewable energy plants generated enough electricity to meet 87% of the country's power demand in November, national grid operator Redes Energeticas Nacionais (REN) said on Tuesday.

The positive result was due to the very favourable conditions for hydropower and wind power production. Hydropower alone had a new historical high delivering 6,719 MW to the local grid on November 5, the highest level for this year.

Based on REN's data, conventional energy sources accounted for 13% of the Iberian country's electricity consumption last month, while natural gas consumption decreased by 21% year-on-year.

Since the beginning of the year, renewables have satisfied 59% of the Portuguese power needs. Wind energy contributed 25%, hydropower had a share of 21%, solar photovoltaic (PV) 7%, and biomass 6%.
