Portugal's national grid operator Redes Energeticas Nacionais (REN) announced on Monday that the country's renewable energy plants met 53% of the national electricity consumption in July.

Solar supplied 15% last month alone, a record high for this power source, with a peak of more than 2,500 MW. Wind power came in second with 18%, while hydropower and biomass contributed 14% and 6%, respectively.

Non-renewable production covered 9% and the remaining 38% corresponded to imported energy, according to data from REN.

Overall electricity consumption grew by 3.6%. When adjusted for the effects of temperature and number of working days, the increase was 2.6%.

During the first seven months of the year, renewables have met 78% of the nation's power needs. Hydropower plants were at the top of the contribution list with a share of 36%. Wind parks contributed 27%, while solar accounted for 9% and biomass for 6%, REN noted.
