Spain’s renewables generated 13,460 GWh of electricity in July, increasing the output by 23.2% year-on-year, Spanish power grid operator Red Electrica de Espana (REE) said in its early estimates report on Friday.

Renewables accounted for 55.3% of the total power production in July, compared to 58.7% one month earlier.

As the summer progresses, photovoltaic solar power continues to break production records. This technology generated 5,840 GWh of electricity in July, 27.7% more than in the same period a year ago, marking a new monthly production high.

Also, on July 12, solar PV beat its daily production record by generating 211 GWh, REE said.

Solar PV led the national power mix for the third consecutive month, occupying a 24% share of the total production. Nuclear power followed with a 20.8% share, while wind power trailed behind with 17.4%.

REE’s provisional figures for renewables and selected non-renewable energy technologies are presented in the table below:

Technology: Estimated generation in GWh: year-on-year change: Share in July:
Wind 4,236 9.7% 17.4%
Hydro 2,213 69.1% 9.1%
Solar PV 5,840 27.7% 24.0%
Solar CSP 718 -6.6% 2.9%
Renewable waste 82 -1.3% 0.3%
Other renewables 365 14.3% 1.5%
Nuclear 5,067 -1.1% 20.8%
Cogeneration 1,518 2.8% 6.2%
Combined-cycle gas 3,182 -35.7% 13.1%
Coal 207 -37.8% 0.9%

National electricity demand climbed by 0.2% in July to 22,730 GWh gross. After adjusting for temperature and working hours, national electricity demand declined by 0.8% year-on-year.
