Non-conventional renewables generated 36.7% of Chile’s electricity in July, increasing their gross monthly share from 34.1% in June, according to new data from the Chilean national energy commission (CNE).

Gross power production from non-conventional renewables, which exclude large hydro, totalled 2,695 GWh in July, representing a 9.2% increase month-on-month and an 18.1% boost in annual terms, the CNE said in the latest report.

Conventional energy sources produced 4,643 GWh gross, a decline of 2.4% compared to their June output and down by 5.0% year-on-year.

The CNE’s figures for non-conventional renewables and their performance in July are presented in the table:

Technology: Gross generation in July in GWh: month-on-month change: year-on-year change: Share in July:
Biomass 170 5.6% 2.3% 6.3%
Wind 1,004 3.4% 37.1% 37.3%
Solar PV 1,326 18.4% 16.2% 49.2%
Solar CSP 0 -100% 0% --
Small run-of-river hydro 168 -10.8% -14.8% 6.2%
Geothermal 27 -0.1% -40.3% 1.0%

At the same time, Chile’s total net installed non-conventional renewable energy capacity rose to 15,772 MW in July from 15,012 MW in June.
