Japanese renewable power producer Renova Inc (TYO:9519) announced today the 20.5-MW Akita Biomass Power Plant has commenced power supply to local mobile operator NTT Docomo Inc.

Owned by United Renewable Energy Co Ltd, a subsidiary of Renova, the biomass facility utilises 70% of its fuel from materials in Akita prefecture that would have otherwise gone unused.

Renova said the power generated by the plant is delivered through NTT Anode Energy Corporation and will be used at some of NTT Docomo’s facilities in the Tohoku region, northern Japan, such as the NTT Docomo Akita Building. This is the first time the Japanese firm uses biomass-based renewable energy to power its facilities.

Operating since July 2016, the Akita Biomass Power Plant had been selling electricity under the Feed-in Tariff (FIT) system to general power transmission and distribution operators until it was certified by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry in August 2023.

The power plant now sells its output based on long-term fixed-price contracts signed with retail power suppliers, Renova noted.
