The German state of Rhineland-Palatinate installed 1,127 MW of new renewables capacity in 2023, which is more than the total capacity added in the previous three years combined, the local energy agency said on Monday.

In 2023, new photovoltaic systems with a total capacity of 980 MW were built, which is more than two and a half times the amount installed in 2022 and represents the highest-ever increase, the Energy Agency of Rhineland-Palatinate said.

At the same time, the new wind power capacity reached around 146 MW, more than double that of 2022.

Across the entire state, renewable energy plants with gross capacity of 8,608 MW were in operation in 2023, including 4,138 MW of solar power facilities and 4,022 MW of wind power installations.

Rhineland-Palatinate aims to cover its electricity needs entirely with renewable sources by 2030. For this purpose, installed capacities of 8,900 MW of wind energy and 7,700 MW of photovoltaics will be needed, according to a hydrogen study published by Rhineland-Palatinate's ministry for climate protection and energy. To reach the goal, the state needs to add net capacities of 700 MW for wind and 510 MW for photovoltaics annually in the remaining years.
