Spanish hotel chain RIU Hotels & Resorts has purchased 100% green and emission-free electricity for five of its establishments in Mexico, a press release said on Monday.

The hotel company procured the renewable power supply from another compatriot in the country, Iberdrola Mexico, a unit of Spanish utility giant Iberdrola SA (BME:IBE).

The agreement will enable RIU Hotels to secure renewable energy for its three hotels located in Bahia de Banderas, one in Mazatlan, and another in Guadalajara. By using renewable energy, the hotels will avoid emitting over 35,200 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, Iberdrola Mexico said.

The agreement also includes the acquisition of International Renewable Energy Certificates (IRECs) linked to Iberdrola Mexico's wind or photovoltaic farms in the country.

The procurement is in line with RIU Hotels & Resorts' sustainability strategy, Proudly Committed, and its goal of operating in a greener manner, Daniele Camponovo, Director of Operations of RIU Hotels & Resorts in the Mexican Pacific, explained. There is a possibility of more Mexican hotels joining the agreement in the future, Camponovo added.

Previously, the Iberdrola Group and RIU Hotels & Resorts had signed a long-term contract for the supply of green energy to the hotel group's establishments and headquarters in Spain.
