A unit of British engineering company Rolls-Royce Holdings Plc (LON:RR) announced today that it has secured a contract to deliver 80 MW/160 MWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Latvia to support substations of local transmission system operator AST.

Rolls-Royce Solutions GmbH was awarded the order after outbidding two other competitors with an offer worth EUR 77.07 million (USD 83.2m).

Under the contract, the German firm will deliver its mtu EnergyPack technology for one BESS with a capacity of 20 MW/40 MWh in the city of Tume and another 60-MW/120-MWh site in Rezekne. Apart from the installation and commissioning, the company will also be in charge of the facilities under a five-year maintenance agreement.

Rolls-Royce Solutions will partner with Germany-based LEC Construction International GmbH and Latvia’s Enersense SIA on the construction works.

More than 85% of the project’s cost will be covered by EU funding, AST had said in an earlier statement. The two systems are expected to be launched in operation in the autumn of 2025.
