Romania is expected to sign contracts under its first auction under the contract for difference (CfD) mechanism by the end of 2024, the Romanian Photovoltaic Industry Association (RPIA) announced.

The 15-year contracts will be granted in an ongoing tender that seeks to award 500 MW of solar and 1 GW of onshore wind projects. Bidding in the competition will be open until November 18, a date set following a request for an extension of the original October 23 deadline.

The inaugural CfD auction is being held under a wider scheme with a total budget of EUR 3 billion (USD 3.54bn) that will support a total of 5 GW of renewable energy projects. The maximum prices in the initial round launched last September are set at EUR 82 per MWh for electricity produced by onshore wind installations and EUR 78 per MWh for electricity produced in photovoltaic solar installations.

A second auction to allocate the remaining 3.5 GW of planned capacity is due to be held next year.
