Russian nuclear energy corporation Rosatom has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) to probe the feasibility for building 372 MW of wind farms in Myanmar.

The pacts were signed by the company’s subsidiary NovaWind with the government of Myanmar during the annual international economic forum in St Petersburg, Rosatom said last week.

Rosatom will carry out a feasibility study covering the construction of 172 MW of wind parks in the region of Magway in central Myanmar. As part of the initiative, the company will collect wind measurement data at two sites in Minhla and Midon districts where it plans to install plants of 116 MW and 56 MW, respectively.

Preparations for early development works on the projects are expected to be launched “very soon.”

Additionally, NovaWind and Myanmar’s Ministry of Electricity and Energy, along with local firm Zeya & Associates, will collaborate on a project envisaging the construction of a 200-MW wind farm in the villages of Kyaukpadaung and Nyaung-U in the central region of Mandalay. The parties are set to conduct a feasibility study and wind measurements related to the specific project.

Since its creation in 2017, NovaWind has commissioned 880 MW of wind power capacity. The company aims to have 1.7 GW of capacity in operation by 2027.
