Ørsted achieves 1st power at 900-MW Taiwanese offshore wind farm

Ørsted A/S (CPH:ORSTED) has generated first power at the 900-MW Greater Changhua 1 & 2a offshore wind project, Taiwan’s largest and first far-shore wind farm, the Danish developer said today.

The first batch of turbines have been installed and energised, with first power reaching the national grid on schedule.

The wind power plant, located 35-60 km (22-37 miles) off the coast of Changhua County, will consist of 111 Siemens Gamesa 8.0-167 DD wind turbines. Its construction is due to be completed this year.

The 900 MW capacity was awarded to Ørsted in April 2018 via a grid allocation process. Ørsted Taiwan general manager Christy Wang said that achieving first power in four years has not been an easy task, especially with the challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ørsted is also developing the 920-MW Greater Changhua 2b & 4 offshore wind farm in Taiwan, which is expected to start operations in 2025. In addition, it has started environmental impact assessments of the Xu Feng 1, 2 and 3 projects, potentially totaling 2.1 GW, and the Wo Neng 1 and 2 offshore wind projects with a potential capacity of 3 GW. The company wants to use them, together with the 570-MW Greater Changhua 3 development, to participate in the coming zonal development.
