Ørsted-ATP team brings in construction partners for Danish energy island bid

Danish offshore wind major Ørsted A/S (CPH:ORSTED) and compatriot pension fund ATP said today they are bringing in three construction experts -- Aarsleff, Bouygues and Van Oord -- to support their bid for the Danish North Sea energy island.

Ørsted and ATP announced a tie-up in April to submit a bid in the upcoming tender for the world's first artificial energy island.
Now, they are bringing on board three partners with the required design and engineering expertise and offshore construction experience, according to the announcement.

Denmark’s Aarsleff, which was a construction partner at the Oresund Link between Denmark and Sweden and has led several harbour expansions in the Nordics, will be leading the construction work.

Bouygues Travaux Publics, an affiliate of France’s Bouygues Construction, brings in expertise in building large-scale offshore constructions such as bridges, tunnels and land reclamations, Ørsted said.

Dutch marine contractor Van Oord, meanwhile, has worked with Ørsted on offshore projects in several countries. It has constructed the Palm Jumeirah and many other artificial islands, the energy company noted.

In February, Denmark reached a broad political agreement to build an artificial island in the North Sea surrounded by offshore wind turbines with a potential capacity of 10 GW. According to an announcement by the energy ministry at the time, the government wants to realise the project through a public-private partnership and plans to open a tender to select private partners.

The Danish government also has plans for a second energy hub of 2 GW, to be established on the island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea.
