CIP completes construction of 300-MW Taiwanese offshore wind farm
Sep 05, 2024 9:51 CESTDanish clean energy company Ørsted A/S (CPH:ORSTED) has officially opened its Greater Changhua 1 and 2a offshore wind farms in Taiwan with a combined installed capacity of 900 MW.
The developer held an inauguration ceremony at its operations and maintenance hub at the Port of Taichung, attended by Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen. The event followed the recent announcement of the installation of all 111 Siemens Gamesa SG 8.0-167 DD wind turbines at the wind farm complex, which is now operating and fully connected to the grid.
“Greater Changhua 1 and 2a are our first gigawatt-scale offshore wind farms outside of Europe. They’re also Taiwan’s first utility-scale far-shore wind farms and the largest of their kind in APAC, reaffirming Taiwan as the frontrunner in the region,” commented Ørsted’s chief executive Mads Nipper.
The Greater Changhua 1 and 2a offshore wind farms have doubled Taiwan’s offshore wind capacity and have also supported the development of Taiwan’s offshore wind ecosystem, the company said.
The 605.2-MW Greater Changhua 1 is co-owned by Ørsted and a consortium of CDPQ and Cathay PE, white the 294.8-MW Greater Changhua 2a is fully owned by Ørsted.
The Danish company is currently building the 920-MW Greater Changhua 2b and 4 offshore wind farms. Along with Taiwan’s first commercial offshore wind farm, the 128-MW Formosa 1, Ørsted is operating and constructing almost 2 GW of offshore wind in Taiwan.
