Danish offshore wind developer Ørsted A/S (CPH:ORSTED) will explore repurposing a gas platform in the Southern North Sea as an artificial nesting site to serve as a potential compensation measure for offshore wind impact on birds.
The measure is being considered in relation to the development of Ørsted’s Hornsea Four offshore wind farm, which is currently being progressed through the Planning Inspectorate Development Consent Order process.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between Orsted Hornsea Project Four Ltd and Alpha Petroleum Resources Ltd and Energean UK Ltd, the owners of the Wenlock field gas platform, located 98 km (61 mile) north-east of the Bacton Gas Terminal in Norfolk, which is nearing decommissioning.
Its repurposing is being considered as an alternative to the construction of a new artificial nesting structure. The Wenlock platform is already a kittiwake nesting site with around 69 nests according to a June 2022 survey.
