Russian forces capture Zaporizhzhia NPP in Ukraine

Russia’s military forces have captured the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (NPP) in Ukraine, which is the largest in all of Europe.

Reports about the seizing of the NPP followed news about an attack at the site that lead to fire breaking out at a training building in the early hours of Friday morning. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine eventually said that the fire had been extinguished.

“The personnel continue working at their workplaces, operational personnel monitor the state of power units and ensure their operation in accordance with the requirements of the process procedures for safe operation. Walkdowns are also carried out to identify any damages on the site,” the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine said in a statement.

The regulator also provided information about the state of each power unit, saying that Unit 1 is in outage, Units 2 and 3 have been disconnected from the grid with the cool down already in progress, Unit 4 is still operating at 690 MW power, and Units 5 and 6 are being cooled down.

No changes in the radiation situation have been registered, the regulator added.

The Zaporizhzhia NPP is operated by Ukrainian state enterprise Energoatom.
