Rwanda inks 8.5-MW PPA with GigaWatt Global

Jul 24, 2013 - The Government of Rwanda said on Monday it had sealed a power purchase agreement (PPA) for the output of a 8.5-MW solar park proposed by GigaWatt Global Rwanda Ltd.

Under the contract, GigaWatt Global Rwanda will take care of the design, maintenance and operation of the photovoltaic (PV) facility, to be constructed in the district of Rwamagana, eastern Rwanda. In addition, the firm will secure financing for the project, estimated at USD 23 million (EUR 17.4m).

The solar installation, touted as the first of its kind in East Africa, is expected to be switched on in June 2014. A feasibility study for the project has already been completed.

GigaWatt Global was established by the founders of Israeli solar energy firm Arava Power Co, which has built six solar farms in Israel.
