Rwanda signs contracts for 10-MW solar project - report

May 19, 2014 - The government of Rwanda signed on Thursday contracts with a group of companies for the construction of a 10-MW solar park in eastern Rwanda, daily New Times reported.

The photovoltaic (PV) facility will be built and managed by the Goldsol II tie-up that includes South African firm TMM Renewables, Malta-based Gesto Energy Africa and Rwanda-based 3E Power Solar. The consortium won the USD 30-million (EUR 22m) project in a government tender in December 2013.

The plant, to be situated in Kayonza district in Rwanda’s Eastern Province, is scheduled to be operational in 21 months. When up and running, it will sell its output to the Water, Energy and Water Sanitation Authority (EWSA) at RWF 120 (USD 0.178/EUR 0.129) per kWh. The Kayonza solar park will be the second large-scale facility in Rwanda together with an 8.5-MW plant being built in Rwamagana district by Norway’s Scatec Solar and Gigawatt Global Cooperatief.

The government of Rwanda aims to increase its renewable power capacity to 563 MW by 2017 from 120 MW currently.
