German energy company RWE AG (ETR:RWE) is holding a ground-breaking ceremony today at the Port of Thorsminde in Denmark for the service base of its 1.1-GW Thor offshore wind farm.

The service building, expected to be completed in 12 months, will house a team of 50 to 60 people that will operate and maintain the wind farm in shifts. The team is set to move into the new service base at the end of 2025. Starting in spring 2026, crew transfer vessels will transport workers to the offshore site on a daily basis.

“Our Thor offshore wind farm is located approximately 22 kilometres from the Danish Port of Thorsminde. The port therefore offers the shortest sea route to the wind farm – making Thorsminde the ideal place for our new operations and maintenance base. By investing several million euros in Thorsminde and by creating up to 60 permanent jobs in the long-run, we will contribute to the local economy and community,” said Pernille Asgaard Haaning, CEO of RWE Denmark.

RWE recently secured offshore construction permit for the project, which will become Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm. Installation of its 72 turbines is scheduled to begin in 2026 and is planned to be carried out from the port of Esbjerg. The wind farm is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2027.
