RWE picks Thyboron port as Thor’s offshore construction base
Nov 11, 2024 9:57 CESTGerman energy company RWE AG (ETR:RWE) has been awarded the offshore construction permit by the Danish Energy Agency for its 1.1-GW Thor offshore wind farm in Denmark, paving the way for offshore work to start in the spring of 2025 as planned.
Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm will be located about 22 kilometres (13.7 miles) off the west coast of Jutland and will be made up of 72 SG 14-236 DD turbines. Half of the turbines will use carbon dioxide (CO2)-reduced steel towers, while 40 turbines will feature recyclable rotor blades.
In a statement on Thursday, Thomas Michel, COO of RWE Offshore Wind, said that with the Thor project, RWE is not only delivering Denmark's largest offshore wind farm but is also leading in sustainable technology investments, such as recyclable blades and turbine towers made of greener steel.
RWE plans to prepare the seabed for the construction activities in the beginning of 2025 before commencing foundation installation in the spring. Turbine installation is slated to begin in 2026, with the wind park to be fully operational by the end of 2027.
Work is advancing onshore, with the laying of cables and the construction of an onshore substation in the municipality of Lemvig, the company said.
Turbine installation works will be carried out from the port of Esbjerg. RWE, meanwhile, recently received the first monopile foundations for Thor at the port of Eemshaven in the Netherlands.
RWE secured a concession to build the wind farm in late 2021.
