RWE may build solar, wind plant in Egypt - report

(SeeNews) – Nov 8, 2012 - German utility RWE AG (ETR:RWE) considers to set up a new solar and wind plant in Egypt to supply its oil production in the country, German daily Handelsblatt reported yesterday, citing company’s research chief Frank-Detlef Drake.

Drake said that the utility intends to create an "efficient and stable power supply" for its production sites via the combination of solar and wind power.

The research chief also added that RWE also may build a new power plant in Morocco.

RWE is a co-founder of the Desertec Industrie Initiative (DII) which plans large solar and wind projects in the deserts of northern Africa, which, once the infrastructure is built, are also expected to supply Europe and the Middle East. According to the expectations, these plants will cover one fifth of Europe’s energy needs by 2050.
