The US business of German energy company RWE AG (ETR:RWE) said today it has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) to supply electric vehicle maker Rivian (NASDAQ:RIVN) with the electricity from a repowered 127-MW wind project in Texas.

The 15-year deal will see RWE’s Champion Wind project in Nolan and Mitchell Counties help supply Rivian’s fast-charging network with 100% renewable energy. “We are excited to add the Champion project and 127 MW of clean energy to Rivian’s growing portfolio, connecting Rivian owners to projects that drive meaningful benefits for our climate, conservation and communities,” said Paul Frey of Rivian.

Originally commissioned in 2008, the Champion Wind farm commenced a repowering earlier this year, which is due to be completed in the middle of 2025. Siemens Gamesa is supplying 41 turbines with new US-made nacelles and blades that will be installed on existing towers, extending the lifetime of the facility. As part of the repowering project, the wind farm will get six new Siemens Gamesa turbines rated at 3.1 MW. MA Mortenson Company is the construction contractor.

RWE is also partnering with Iowa-based REGEN Fiber to turn the decommissioned wind turbine blades into reinforcement fibers for the construction industry.
