RWE AG (ETR:RWE) has secured all construction and environmental permits to proceed with the construction of a 100-MW electrolyser to produce green hydrogen in the Netherlands, the German energy group said today.

The electrolysis plant will be part of the solutions for OranjeWind, a 795-MW Dutch offshore wind project undertaken by RWE and French peer TotalEnergies that will also integrate smart charging stations for electric vehicles, e-boilers and battery storage facilities.

RWE’s plan is to install the electrolyser near the Magnum Power Station in Eemshaven, in the north of the country, and source electricity from the OranjeWind offshore park to better integrate the generation. Its project complements the intentions of TotalEnergies to use its share of the future wind farm’s output to power 350 MW of electrolysers and produce about 40,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.

RWE noted that the OranjeWind electrolyser project is still subject to a final investment decision (FID), which will depend on the availability of a national hydrogen network for transporting the green fuel to customers. This is also a condition for the execution of its 50-MW Eemshydrogen project in the Netherlands, the German group added.
