German energy group RWE AG (ETR:RWE) said today it has been granted a 495-MW Electricity Business Licence (EBL) by South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, providing the company with its first exclusive development rights for offshore wind in the country.

The EBL, which permits companies to generate and supply electricity in South Korea, is for the Seohae offshore wind project, located some 45 kilometres (28 miles) off the coast of Taean County in Chungcheongnam Province.

“This first Electricity Business Licence is a key milestone in the further development of our Seohae offshore wind project," said Sven Utermoehlen, CEO of RWE Offshore Wind. The next step is to work with local suppliers to continue Engineering and Environmental Impact Assessment studies, engage with the local county and the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) to plan and secure a grid connection agreement, the company explained.

RWE has a 3-GW offshore wind project development pipeline in Korea, including the 495-MW Seohae project, the 510-MW Neulsaem Ui project off Shinan County and the 2-GW Hanee Baram project in Incheon. RWE has also formed an offshore wind co-development partnership with Hyundai Engineering & Construction.
