UK-based Cognitive Business said on Wednesday it has been hired to provide a complete package of AI and forecasting technology to German energy major RWE AG’s (ETR:RWE) 180-MW Robin Rigg offshore wind farm in Scotland.

Cognitive Business will provide a suite of AI, pattern recognition and production forecasting technology. This will enable RWE to plot with real time accuracy the operation of maintenance vessels, predict movement in and out of a port faced with tidal restrictions, determine the most profitable turbines to know where to focus maintenance programmes and compare year-on-year performance and direct activity to rectify anomalies.

The financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.

The 58-turbine Robin Rigg facility is the first commercial offshore wind farm built in Scottish waters, having started full generation in 2010. It generates enough electricity to power about 117,000 homes.

“Robin Rigg is a mature windfarm and RWE is an experienced farm operator, but we are still very much engaged with finding the solutions that draw out the remaining opportunities to make additional savings and drive further efficiencies,” said Gregg McConnell, operations co-ordinator at RWE and project lead at Robin Rigg.
