S Australia's budget earmarks funds for home, grid-scale storage

South Australia's 2018/19 state budget, unveiled on Tuesday, has earmarked AUD 184 million (USD 132m/EUR 114m) to make electricity cheaper and more reliable.

This funding includes AUD 100 million to create the Liberal government's promised Home Battery Scheme that will subsidise the purchase of energy storage systems for up to 40,000 households.

The budget will also spend AUD 50 million on grid-scale storage to support the development of new storage technologies to back up the state's abundant renewable energy, according to a media release by energy minister Dan van Holst Pellekaan.

In addition, AUD 30 million have been earmarked to improve demand management.

The government is also providing up to AUD 14 million, including AUD 4 million in direct support and AUD 10 million in underwriting, to speed up early works on construction of the interconnector to New South Wales.
