S Korea resumes ethanol imports from Brazil in Sep - report

Oct 18, 2013 - South Korea imported 4,000 tonnes of Brazilian ethanol in September 2013, after a two-year pause, Brazilian sector news portal Jornal Cana reported on Thursday, quoting data released in Singapore the previous day.

The resumed imports were due to the fact that the Brazilian ethanol was slightly cheaper than the Korean in September, or USD 590 per tonne for the Brazilian biofuel against USD 600 for the Korean, according to Brazilian traders.

South Korea imported 18,000 tonnes of ethanol in September 2013, up 4% month-on-month and 14.15% year-on-year. Apart from Brazil, other ethanol exporters to the country are Australia, Pakistan, Vietnam and South Africa.

The previous time Brazil had exported ethanol to South Korea was a 6,231-tonne shipment in October 2011.
