Sora Fuel, a company that produces sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) using only water, air and renewable energy, said on Thursday that it has secured USD 6 million (EUR 5.56m) in seed funding to hire staff, establish commercial partnerships and further develop its technology.

Sora Fuel utilises a technology that captures and uses atmospheric carbon dioxide which is integrated and converted into a liquid bicarbonate electrolyser at just USD 20 per ton. The company claims that its patented, closed-loop system that relies only on water and electricity allows the production of SAF at prices comparable to current Jet A fuel.

The start-up was conceived within venture capital firm Engine Ventures based on technology from Curtis Berlinguette’s lab at the University of British Columbia.

“Sora Fuel’s technology eliminates 90% of the energy currently required in standard DAC processes, opening up an entirely new and more sustainable path for producing carbon negative fuels,” CEO Gareth Ross noted in the press statement.

The oversubscribed seed round was led by Engine Ventures and backed by Wireframe Ventures and other participants.
