Saft bags USD-10m battery order for solar systems in Qatar

French group Saft (EPA:SAFT) has won a USD-10-million (EUR 9.1m) contract to supply nickel-based batteries for solar-powered systems that will serve Qatar Petroleum’s Dukhan oilfield.

More specifically, UK engineering and construction firm Kentz Corp Ltd (LON:KENZ), part of SNC-Lavalin Group Inc (TSE:SNC), has ordered about 40,000 of Saft’s Sunica.plus energy storage systems, according to a press release on Wednesday.

The French group will install the batteries at around 775 wells across the Dukhan oilfield. In combination with solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, the batteries will provide backup power for a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) network that is being built by Kentz to monitor the wellheads. The solar PV installations will also power corrosion protection systems at the site.

The batteries will be deployed over the next two years, Saft said.
