Saft switches on 10MW/5.5MWh battery in Bermuda Saft Intensium® Max containerised battery system, All rights reserved.

French battery maker Saft Groupe SA has delivered and installed a 10-MW/5.5-MWh energy storage facility for Bermuda Electric Light Co (BELCO), Bermuda's sole supplier of electricity.

The system will help BELCO provide spinning reserve and frequency response to maintain the stability of the power grid. Saft, a unit of French oil company Total SA (EPA:FP), was responsible for its design, delivery and installation, it said on Tuesday.

The containerised lithium-ion battery systems for the battery storage system were made in Jacksonville, Florida. The facility is equipped with control and monitoring equipment, and power conversion components made by Swiss-based power and automation group ABB (VTX:ABBN). The entire equipment was installed and put on stream by Deltro Group.

Currently, Bermuda is highly dependent on imported fuel for power generation. After passing its Electricity Act in 2016, the island territory is working to modernise itsapproach to generation, distribution and sales.
