Saft to supply 10-MW battery for solar project in Cote d'Ivoire

Saft to supply 10-MW battery for solar project in Cote d'Ivoire Saft Intensium® Max containerised battery system, All rights reserved.

Battery maker Saft, a subsidiary of French multinational TotalEnergies SE (EPA:TTE), has secured a contract to deliver a 10-MW energy storage solution for the Boundiali solar PV project in Cote d’Ivoire.

Saft said that it has been awarded the contract by Eiffage Energie Systemes, the energy-focused business unit of French civil engineering group Eiffage SA (EPA:FGR). Eiffage Energie Systemes is the main contractor for the 37.5-MWp Boundiali, which Saft touts as the first large-scale solar project in the West African country.

Domestic state-owned entity Cote d’Ivoire Energies (CI-Energies) owns the Boundiali project and will operate the power plant.

Saft’s role in the project will be to deliver a fully-integrated lithium-ion energy storage system (ESS). Its solution will comprise six Saft Intensium Max High Energy containers, providing a total of 13.8 MWh of storage, and power conversion and medium voltage power station systems.

The ESS will provide capacity firming and smoothing of the Boundiali solar farm’s intermittent output, Saft said.

The battery company expects to commission the system at the Boundiali site in September this year.

Cote d'Ivoire generates almost all of its electricity in thermal power plants and hydroelectric dams. The government aims to diversify the nation's energy mix by incorporating more renewables.
