Sainsbury’s celebrates opening of 50-MW wind farm in Scotland

A 50-MW wind farm, the entire output of which is contracted by British supermarket chain J Sainsbury Plc (LON:SBRY), has been switched on in southeastern Scotland, the retailer announced in a statement today.

The Longhill Burn wind farm, owned by global private asset manager Capital Dynamics, is situated in the West Lothian council area near Edinburgh. It has eight Siemens Gamesa turbines with a maximum output of 6.4 MW.

Already operational, the plant is expected to produce around 150,000 MWh annually. At peak capacity, the facility will generate enough electricity to supply up to 33% of Sainsbury’s total electricity needs.

The project was developed in partnership with Energiekontor AG, which managed the construction works and will oversee its day-to-day performance and maintenance.

Sainsbury’s 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) for Longhill Burn is aligned with the British retailer’s strategy to achieve net zero emissions in its own operations by 2035. It is the seventh wind farm from which Sainsbury’s buys the entire power output. The company has been using 100% renewable electricity across its estate since the end of 2021.
